Rocky Mountain Low: The Ups and Downs of RVing (5/23/06)

Our 40 foot Mountain Aire decided it needed a break after apparently mastering the ups and downs of Vail and Loveland Passes. We had almost reached our intended destination South of Denver, when the engine heat gage spiked. We pulled onto an off ramp from C-470 South onto 285, noted pink fluid leaking from the side of the rig and arranged for a tow. We enjoyed the excitement of traffic zipping by as we prayed no one would hit us for about 4-1/2 hours. Then we followed as our precious home was towed to Cummins Rocky Mountain for service. What lengths some RVers will go to obtain "free camping". Fortunately, we're still under warranty.

Scenic I-70 East through Colorado to Denver

I-70's visual delights continue as we wind through red cliffs along the roaring banks of the Colorado River following a rainstorm, then on up through Vail Pass (10,666 ft.) and Loveland Pass (11,990 ft.) and down into Denver.

Utah's incredible, yet stark beauty continues to astound us as we travel I-70 West, through Fish Lake National Forest and San Rafael Desert, enroute to Colorado.

Paddling Quail Creek Reservoir, Hurricane, UT

Lynette enjoys views from the front seat, as we paddle our Old Town canoe on Quail Creek Reservoir, surrounded by Southern Utah's beautiful mountainous terrain. The reservoir is home to large mouth bass, rainbow trout, black crappie, blue gill and catfish.

As the morning inched toward the heat of the day, fisherman launched boats ranging from Walmart inflatables to fiberglass fishing boats with all the bells and whistles, all hoping to land a few.

For us, this was just an exploratory day, a day to enjoy the magnificent scenery of this part of our country and the pleasure of finally getting back on the water. Perhaps we'll test our luck at fishing next time around.

Spectacular Kolob Canyon, Zion National Park, UT

The Kolob Canyon segment of Zion National Park is accessed separately from the main section of the park, but in our opinion, it is the most beautiful and dramatic portion. Don't miss it. It's easily accessed off of I-15, exit 40. All of this spectacular beauty is within view during an easy, 5 mile drive in and back on a dead end road.

Nature's creativity is overwhelmingly beautiful here at Bryce. Mere photos cannot do her justice.
